Media and Information Literacy in Critical Times: Re-imagining Ways of Learning and Information Environments

Media and information literacy (MIL) includes a set of competencies to search, critically evaluate, use and contribute information and media content wisely; knowledge of one’s rights online; understanding how to combat online hate speech and cyberbullying; understanding of the ethical issues surrounding the access and use of information; and engage with media and ICTs to promote equality, free expression, intercultural/interreligious dialogue, peace, etc. Read more about MIL

Global MIL Week also enables connections and sharing of creative projects, the latest research, new ideas, and information across countries and stakeholders involved in MIL, and in print, screen-based and digital media.

3. Use social media to raise awareness about MIL in civil society

4. Send a letter

5. Give a voice to the youth

6. Join the Global Alliance for Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL)

7. Create new partnerships, locally or regionally, to promote MIL in society 

8. Promote UNESCO’s publications and actions 

9. Promote or enroll in the media and information literacy online course

10. Participate in global online debates

 About the feature conference

The feature conference of Global MIL Week 2017 is the Seventh Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Conference. It will be held in Jamaica under the same theme as the Global MIL Week 2017 from 24-27 October 2017, at the Jamaica Conference Centre in Kingston.

The fifth annual global celebration of Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Week will take place from 31 October to 5 November, 2016. The Global MIL Week 2016 highlights include the Sixth Media and Information Literacy and Intercultural Dialogue (MILID) Conferenceand the First General Assembly of the Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL), taking place November 2-5, 2016 in São Paulo, Brazil.

The Global MIL Week activities and conference are important opportunities for stakeholders globally, including members of GAPMIL and the International University MILID Network to meet and share the latest research, projects, new ideas and information with a diverse gathering of stakeholders involved in information and media literacy, and in print, screen-based and digital media.

UNESCO launched Assessment Framework for Media and Information Literacy

UNESCO has launched its Global Media and Information Literacy (MIL) Assessment Framework for the evaluation of countries’ readiness to create an enabling environment for MIL. The publication also aims to assess citizens’ competencies on MIL, particularly targeting teachers in service and training.

"MIL is defined as a set of competencies that empowers citizens to access, retrieve, understand, evaluate and use, create, as well as share information and media content in all formats, using various tools, in a critical, ethical and effective way, in order to participate and engage in personal, professional and societal activities". 


UNESCO advocates that MIL be one of the preconditions of sustainable development and that literate use of information, media and ICT tools, including the Internet, will help to ensure that everyone enjoys the full benefits of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, particularly freedom of expression and access to information.
